Rafael Sierra talks with Dr. Vernon Baker, Executive Director of Just Compassion. Just Compassion serves the Portland area by providing a safe environment for those who are houseless; a place where they can be ‘seen, known and heard.’ Vernon outlined the various services they provide including an overnight shelter, providing meals, clothing items, showers, laundry service and a safe parking program for people living in their vehicles. Vernon also spoke about their Resource Center where people can get assistance regarding personal documents like social security and ID cards, employment and housing information, help finding medical care, substance abuse information and more. Vernon says they may refer people out to someone who might be able to help if they don’t have a particular service available to meet a person’s need.
