Divorce is never easy, and it has a ripple effect on those we love and cherish. Perhaps, more than anyone else, children are the most affected by this monumental life change. All of a sudden, changes that come with a divorce can be overwhelming for children, and the feelings associated with it can be difficult to navigate. No matter how old your children are, we hope these 5 prayers will help you and your kids wherever they are on this journey.
1. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever – Hebrews 13:8 NLT
Lord, give us Your wisdom as we navigate this divorce in our family. I know this is a painful time for my children. but I also know You can help them look to You as their constant guide through any circumstance. We hold on to the promise that You never change, and we find comfort in You as we navigate through this time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. – Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NLT
Heavenly Father, help me and my children to love You with everything we have. Show my family how to wholeheartedly serve You even when the path ahead is very difficult. Help me to show my children the love You have shown me. I submit to You the words I say and the actions I take, and I pray that my kids would see Your Son in me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
3. The Lord is like a father to His children, tender and compassionate to those who fear Him. – Psalm 103:13 NLT
Father, thank You for being such a good example of how I should treat my children. You are so compassionate and understanding toward Your children, and that includes me. Show me how to love my children the same way and always point them to You, even through this difficult time for our family. In Jesus’ name, amen.
4. You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book. – Psalm 56:8 NLT
God, I admit that I’m sorrowful through this divorce and my children are too. Help us to grieve what’s lost while hopefully looking to You for guidance throughout this process. Show my children that they are not alone and You sympathize with them through the sadness they’re feeling. In the name of Jesus, amen.
5. The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” – Psalm 32:8 NLT
Lord God, I trust that You have plans for me and my children’s lives. Advise us as we walk this road, even though it’s painful. Help us to look to You for guidance because we know You will lead us along the best path for us that leads to life. Help my children to trust that You’re watching over them in every circumstance. I pray all these things in Jesus’ name alone. Amen.
