Learning To Worship

Learning to Worship

When I was in college, my dorm room was nestled on a large hill. I would repeatedly walk to its edge and gaze at the blue-drenched sky. As I felt the breeze gliding through my 21-year-old hair, peace would fill my soul. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, pray with thanksgiving” (Phil 4:6) would come to mind. This was one of many verses that helped me pray with confident gratitude as I endeavored to live life as a college student. As college ended, I stared up at the sky from that same spot and thought,” Wow, Lord, I am now done with college. You are so faithful.” (Lam. 3:23) It was an encouraging reminder that worshipping God was something I was learning…and the right thing to do given His love for me the past 4 years. (Heb. 13:5)

We can worship anywhere and everywhere.

The locations might be different, but now I’ve learned worship has various scenes that inspire worship. I have a friend I vacationed with who once said, “When I am by water, I am relaxed and can enjoy God.” Having visited Yosemite, its high mountains and waterfalls also seem to shout, “God is great and awesome!” (Genesis 1:31) The white polka dot stars are numerous places that remind us of our great God. Max Lucado writes, “If you were to drive to the Sun and average 150 miles an hour, a non-stop drive for 24 hours a day, and 365 days a year, it would take you 70 years. The next largest star, Alpha Centauri, would take you 15 million years to make the trip.” Staring at the stars and being overwhelmed by the Milky Way and its vastness ignites worship as I realize how small I am and how big and great God is. (Psalm 19:1) He is an amazing Creator. He has creative plans and purposes for our life. Let’s live for His glory. (Isaiah 43:7) and remember, we can worship Him anywhere and everywhere.

Pause and Reflect

1. According to John 4:23-24, how can we worship more effectively?

2. Since we can worship anywhere and everywhere, what are your ‘go-to’ spots that help you worship? What places hinder you that you should avoid?
