Find Hope in the Storm

This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. – Hebrews 6:19

Two months ago, my family and I packed up our belongings and moved 2,300 miles across the country. A few weeks after we arrived, there was a tornado warning in our area. We've never lived in a place with tornados before, so this was a new and terrifying experience. The winds howled throughout the night like a wolf, and the rains beat against the walls like a boxer.

After the tornado had passed, I went outside to look for damage. Our plastic storage shed, which isn't anchored to anything, had collapsed. But, on the other hand, our kid's play structure, which is firmly anchored to the ground with wooden beams and strong metal bolts, stood intact. It was a great reminder that, with a suitable anchor, you can weather any storm.

In today's verse, the author of Hebrews reminds us that the hope we have in Christ is an anchor for our soul. We can take our pain, questions, and struggles directly to our Heavenly Father and find the grace and mercy we need when we need it most (Hebrews 4:16). Circumstances in the world are constantly changing, but something which will never change is God's love for you and his promises to you. So when hardships tear through our world and your life like a tornado, you can run to Jesus and anchor yourself in him.

What does it look like to anchor yourself in Christ?

It starts by laying your fears and heartache at his feet. Then you must spend time in God's word each day to recharge your spiritual batteries. It means to cast your cares on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). It means to connect with other believers in a local church so you can encourage each other in your faith (Hebrews 10:25). It may also require talking to a pastor or counselor who can walk alongside and guide you through your storm.

Don't allow what's happening around you or to you to rob you of the hope God has for you. Shift your focus from crisis to Christ, your problem to your provider, from your situation to your savior. Meditate on the promises of God. Remember what Jesus did for you on the cross. Know that there's nothing on your heart you can't lay at his feet. Put your hope in the Lord and trust him to be there for you no matter what (Hebrews 13:5).

There's no storm too big for you to face and overcome with Jesus as your anchor.
