8 Prayers for Children in a Blended Family

Blended families can be tricky to navigate, but just like God has a plan for marriages and families, He has a plan for blended families too! Sometimes it can be challenging to know how to pray for children going through transitions and changes in a blended family. Here are 8 prayers to help you pray powerful and meaningful prayers for the children in your blended family.

1. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6-7 NLT

Lord, change can cause anxiety and worry in people, especially children. Help these kids express their fear and anxiety to be dealt with and overcome. Holy Spirit, reassure them of Your love and comfort them. Lord, help us demonstrate grace as we know they are responding to all these transitions. Amen.

2. “The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” – Mark 12:31 NLT

Dear Jesus, new sibling relationships can be difficult to get used to. Lord, please help these children to love one another with Your love. Help them to grow their relationships with one another that last throughout their life. May this help them to love You more. In Jesus’ name, amen.

3. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! – Galatians 5:22-23 NLT

Father, sometimes it feels chaotic and hectic because everyone goes their separate ways and deals with their emotions. Lord, help everyone in this family display the Spirit’s fruits. Let them truly walk in happiness, peace, kindness, and self-control. In Jesus’ name, amen.

4. The LORD says, “I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts, the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.” – Joel 2:25 NLT

Lord, I know You possess the authority and capacity to restore what has been wrongfully stolen. In these kids’ lives, Holy Spirit, please redeem and restore things on all levels—emotionally, physically, relationally, and most importantly, spiritually. Amen.

5. Dear brothers and sisters, I close my letter with these last words: Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you. – 2 Corinthians 13:11 NLT

Lord, sometimes our children end up being divided and at odds with multiple family members with complex grief. Holy Spirit, I ask that a spirit of unity, oneness, and peace permeate our home, leaving a lasting impact on everyone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

6. The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” – Psalms 32:8 NLT

Lord, I realize that these children have experienced a great deal, and I ask that You use everything in this situation to bring them closer to You. Holy Spirit, remind them that you have a purpose and a plan for their lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.

7. Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it. – Proverbs 22:6 NLT

Despite difficulties and occasionally overpowering emotions, Lord, I pray that as these children get to know You and grow in their faith, they will not stray from You as they mature and navigate life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

8. How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony! – Psalms 133:1 NLT

Dear Lord, I pray that, even though we might be a blended family, we will learn to understand and tolerate each other’s differences. May we love and like one another and remain tenderhearted towards You and each other. In Jesus’ name, amen.
