Prayer Guide in Times of Crisis

This prayer guide is designed to help you navigate through times of crisis by anchoring your heart and mind in God’s presence. In moments of overwhelming stress, sorrow, or uncertainty, turning to prayer and Scripture can be a powerful way to find strength and hope. This guide provides a structured way to process difficult emotions, reach out to God, remember His past faithfulness, and lean on Him for recovery. Each section—React, Respond, Reach, Remember, Rely, Recover, and Report—includes Scripture, insights, practical steps, and prayers to guide you. Let this be a reminder that God is near, listening, and ready to support you through every part of your journey.

1. React

In crisis, our emotions are strong and real. Bring these raw reactions to God—He can handle your frustration, sorrow, and confusion.

Scripture:

  • “When Mordecai learned about all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on burlap and ashes, and went out into the city, crying with a loud and bitter wail.” – Esther 4:1 NLT
  • “From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for Your help.” – Psalm 130:1 NLT

Insight:

In Esther 4, Mordecai grieves over the king’s decision to exterminate the Jewish people, pouring out his heart and sorrow. Similarly, in Psalm 130, the psalmist voices his pain and hopelessness to God. Just as Mordecai and the psalmist did, we can bring our anguish and frustration to God when crisis invades our lives. God is willing to listen and wants to be the refuge where we can safely express our pain.

Process Points:

  1. Write down your feelings and bring them to God in prayer.
  2. Identify your immediate reaction and share it with God.
  3. Remember that God is sovereign and sympathizes with how you feel.

Prayer:

God, I’m overwhelmed. I may not fully understand my emotions, but You do. Please guide me through this confusion and remind me that You are in control. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

2. Respond

God invites us to respond openly and honestly, expressing any anger, questions, or sorrow.

Scripture:

  • “I cannot keep from speaking. I must express my anguish. My bitter soul must complain.” – Job 7:11 NLT
  • “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?” – Psalm 22:1 NLT

Insight:

Job and David shared their distress openly with God, showing us that He welcomes our honest prayers.

Process Points:

  1. Write down your response to what is happening.
  2. Acknowledge your feelings and bring them to God.
  3. Know that God is listening, even if you feel confused or lost.

Prayer:

Lord, I bring my questions and hurt to You. I don’t understand why this is happening, but I trust that You have a plan. Help me to hold on to Your goodness. Amen.

3. Reach

After processing our initial response, the next step is to actively reach out to God, who is always near.

Scripture:

  • “When they call on Me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them.” – Psalm 91:15 NLT
  • “Seek the LORD while you can find Him. Call on Him now while He is near.” – Isaiah 55:6 NLT

Insight:

God promises to answer when we call on Him. Whatever you’re going through, He is ready to meet you.

Process Points:

  1. Reflect on what might make it hard to reach out to God.
  2. Express any hesitations to God and ask for help.
  3. Remember that God is always available to listen.

Prayer:

God, I know You’re here even when it’s hard to feel Your presence. Give me the courage to call out to You, knowing that You will answer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

4. Remember

In challenging times, recalling God’s faithfulness in the past can strengthen our faith in the present.

Scripture:

  • “But be sure to fear the LORD and faithfully serve Him. Think of all the wonderful things He has done for you.” – 1 Samuel 12:24 NLT
  • “Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years.” – Deuteronomy 8:2 NLT

Insight:

Reflecting on past instances of God’s provision encourages us to trust Him with today’s struggles.

Process Points:

  1. Write down a time when God brought you through difficulty.
  2. Acknowledge that you need God’s help now just as much as before.
  3. Trust in God’s consistent faithfulness.

Prayer:

Father, I remember how You’ve helped me before. Though I feel overwhelmed now, remind me of Your faithfulness and lead me to trust You through this. Amen.

5. Rely

In a crisis, it can be tempting to rely on our own strength, but true peace comes when we depend on God.

Scripture:

  • “We stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.” – 2 Corinthians 1:9-10 NLT
  • “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my Savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.” – Psalm 18:2 NLT

Insight:

Paul and David both found refuge in God, who gives strength in trials.

Process Points:

  1. Reflect on why it’s difficult to rely on God.
  2. Remind yourself of reasons to trust in Him.
  3. Lean on God’s strength through each circumstance.

Prayer:

Father, help me to rely on You, not on my own strength. Show me how to trust in Your power and not my own understanding. In Your name, Amen.

6. Recover

Recovery from crisis takes time. Allow God to give you strength and hope as you continue to trust in Him.

Scripture:

  • “He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.” – Isaiah 40:29 NLT
  • “I pray that God, the Source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him.” – Romans 15:13 NLT

Insight:

God provides strength in our weakness and fills us with hope as we lean on Him.

Process Points:

  1. Identify one area where you need continued healing.
  2. Bring these needs to God and ask Him for strength.
  3. Remember that God is a steady source of hope.

Prayer:

God, I need Your strength to keep moving forward. Remind me of Your peace, joy, and hope as I continue to recover. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

7. Report and Rejoice

As you recover, share the good things God has done with others. Praise Him in private and in public.

Scripture:

  • “For You are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God.” – Psalm 86:10 NLT
  • “Let all that I am praise the LORD; with my whole heart, I will praise His holy name.” – Psalm 103:1-2 NLT

Insight:

In praising God, we find peace and encourage others to see His goodness.

Process Points:

  1. Write down specific ways God has been faithful.
  2. Praise God in prayer and share His goodness with others.
  3. Recognize God’s unfailing presence throughout your journey.

Prayer:

God, I praise You for all You’ve done in my life. Even in crisis, You are good. May my praise to You be evident to others so they see Your faithfulness. Amen.

This guide is meant to be a support and encouragement through each stage of crisis. As you work through these steps, know that God is by your side, listening and providing strength to see you through.
