With the presidential election around the corner, many have mixed emotions and are curious about what our nation will face next. Will we make it as a nation? How do we pray for such a big event? What is our role as Christians? After all, we are the salt and light of the world, right? The goal of this prayer guide is to simply steer you toward praying for our nation as we step into an important time in our history. Let us never forget that God honors dependency. Prayer is exactly that. It is when we depend on God and trust that the results are His. Our job is to pray. The results belong to God.
1. Trust in God, not the candidate.
Psalm 115:3 says, “Our God is in the heavens and He does as He wishes.”
Prayer: Father we trust that ultimately, You are in control. You are on the throne. We place our faith and trust in You. Regardless of the outcome, our hope does not rest in a candidate, our talents, or our strategies. We choose to trust in Your perfect plan. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2. God’s love on display.
John 13:35 says, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples.”
Prayer: Father, may the world see Your love in and through us. Let our love for each other point people to You. We pray for unity and peace to sweep over our nation. Bless and protect our nation. Help us to love, even our worst enemies, and those who persecute us. We ask You in faith. In Jesus’ great name, amen.
3. Respect and honor the elected candidate.
Romans 13:1 says, “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”
Prayer: Father help us to see each candidate through Your eyes. May we continue to love, respect, and cover the candidate in constant prayer. In Jesus’ mighty name, amen.
4. God’s peace for anxious hearts.
John 14:27 says, “I am leaving you with a gift-peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”
Prayer: Father, we acknowledge this is a time when many are anxious and fearful. Would You calm and still our hearts. The peace You give is a peace this world cannot provide. We pray for the election to be peaceful and free of chaos. Let Your peace rule over every heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
5. Honesty and truth.
Psalm 119:163 says, “I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your instructions.”
Prayer: Father, we pray for the candidates to speak the truth and embrace honesty. Help them to see the value of telling the truth. May the candidates walk in integrity, and not give in to the temptation of twisting the truth. Lord may our nation value truth. You told us that the truth will set us free. Our nation is in need of this freedom. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
6. Physical protection.
Psalm 20:1 says, “In times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry. May the name of God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm.”
Prayer: Lord, we ask for physical protection over the candidates and everyone participating in the election process. Protect each person from harm. Protect their families and remove any fear. You are our refuge and strength Lord. Thank You for being a God who is the ever-present help in our time of need. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
7. Godly discernment when voting.
James 1:5 says, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”
Prayer: Father, give Your people wisdom and discernment as they vote. Help them understand the values that bring honor to Your name. May they vote with healthy godly conviction as You lead them. For those considering to vote, show them the importance of voting and contributing to society. We ask this in faith, in Jesus’ name, amen.
8. Choose humility.
James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
Prayer: Father, may the candidates walk in humility and exalt Your Son, not themselves. Show them the path of humility and strip them of any pride. We pray for Your name to be lifted high during this election, not the names of the candidates. We repent of pride and ask for the strength to humble ourselves. We cannot do this on our own, so we look to You. In Jesus’ most holy name, amen.
