Gokey was singing from an early age in weekly church services, and would eventually become the music director of Faith Builders International Ministries. During this time, he would fall in love and marry his wife, Sophia. Sophia loved American Idol and always encouraged him to audition. After her passing in 2008, Gokey decided to audition in her honor.
Gokey captivated audiences with his voice, mainly sticking to gospel and soul music and finishing third overall in the competition, earning him a spot on the American Idols LIVE! Tour. Having finished with the tour, he signed on with 19 Recordings to release a full length album, “My Best Days” in 2010. The artist would begin opening for Taylor Swift and self-released his EP, “Love Again” in 2012.

The artist’s music would reach new heights with the release of the single, “More Than You Think I Am”. Over the next few years, Gokey would release a popular Christmas album, as well as a Spanish-language version of his “Hope In Front Of Me” album. Gokey’s 2021 album, “Jesus People” featured songs like “Stand In Faith,” but his singles such as “Live Up To Your Name” would reach higher spots on the charts.
This artist has brought us many songs that have helped us through our darkest days, and we hope he will continue to do so. Gokey breaks down his mindset for dealing with disappointment and hardship:
“If you’ve been praying for a long time and haven’t found the answer, you’re gonna need to look at all the good things that God has done. What you feel now may not be the truest, and God is not finished with you yet. The best is yet to come.”
