"Could it really be this simple
Your kindness changes everything
It's like Your grace is on a mission
To take down my religion"
When we make mistakes, we tend to assume that God is disappointed or angry at us for letting Him down. We beat ourselves up and assume that we have irreparably damaged our relationship with God, but this is not how it works with God. We often forget that He is different from the kind of love we have received in this world. God’s love is not conditional or reliant upon our good behavior. In Patrick Mayberry's “How You Love Me”, we are reminded of the true nature of God’s unconditional love for us, His children. No matter how much we try to earn the affection of God through our actions or sacrifices to Him, nothing in the world could ever increase or decrease the amount of love God holds for each and every one of us.

“How You Love Me” begins with the rustic strumming of an acoustic guitar, gradually including more instruments and a more complex melody as the song continues. Mayberry expresses his astonishment at the way that God continues to show us unswerving love even in our worst moments. Even when we are broken and hurting, when we are hiding from Him or feel like we are not good enough, we are still good enough for Him.
This song shows that, while we may have an image of an angry and vengeful God in our minds, this is not how God feels towards us when we make mistakes. Mayberry reminds us that the shame and guilt we feel for our mistakes is the exact reason why God sent His Son down to the earth to die for us. When we mess up, we must remember to go to God and ask Him for forgiveness instead of wallowing in the shame He freed us from. His mercies are new every day, and He is waiting for us to come running back to Him.
“How You love me when I'm broken
How You love me when I'm weak
When I'm all out of options
When I can't bring You anything”
“How You Love Me” was released in November 2021 as part of Patrick Mayberry’s EP, “Holy Spirit Come”. About the songs on this EP, Mayberry says, “I pray that they meet people right where they are in their journey with faith and the Lord…that they would continue to shape and transform how they view themselves and God while pointing to how God views them – as His kids who He’s crazy about!”
